We have tried to ReThatch and Repair these cost effective
Bamboo Tiki Huts with zero succes and we have done
Re-Thatches since 2002
Please Note:
Bamboo Huts are too low pitched
to be Thatch with
Natural Alang Alang Thatch.

We are getting a lot more of these Huts now for repairs ...
This is not a Bali Hut but a Bamboo Tiki Hut designed to last 3 - 5 years if you are lucky or till the first hail storm. In order for the Tiki Huts to be more waterproof they sandwiched a black plastic between two paper thin leaves. The hips are a little bit thicker but are also the first to deteriorate.
Although we have tried a few times in the past, We just did not manage to ever Re-Thatch or Repair one of these the Paper Bark Thin Bamboo Tiki Huts,
For the following reasons:
1) We cannot Re-Thatch this Tiki Hut with Natural Alang Alang Thatch. The 18 to 20 degree pitch is too low, the real thatch will just rot very quickly. Needless to say our 150mm natural Alang Alang thatch will actually last 5 to 7 times longer than the paper thin sheets it has on it at the moment. We need a min pitch of 35 degrees.
2) The Bamboo Tiki Hut design uses a thin string thought the papyrus thin paper like sheets to span wide gaps, If you try to walk on it you will fall straight though. For real Thatch you need vertical rafter spacings 500mm to 750mm apart...
3) We additionally found dust beetles in about 65% of these Bamboo Tiki Huts. Dust Beetles just love the soft bamboo frames of these huts, if you see some white powder on the floor and furniture and 1 to 2mm holes in the bamboo its game over. Brisbane Thatch Bali Hut Frames will last 60 years and is 100% CCA treated against white ants and weather.
4) The other structural problem we find is that they use very thick nails on the hips to secure hip coverings. This creates big cracks that allow water to penetrate into the bamboo and shorten the lifespan considerably. Water stays in the bamboo and it will speed up deterioration.
5) We also find that 80% of the Bamboo Tiki Huts start to lean to one side after a few years. Although bamboo is very strong and flexible it is not sturdy and rigid over a long period of time and it's not treated against weather and white ants.
6) The only way we found to Re-Thatch or even just repair these Tiki Huts is to replace the whole Tiki Hut...

7) None of the screws nails and bolds on the Low Cost Bamboo Huts are galvanized simply because the Huts are not design to last for 60 years, only 7 years maximum.

When you found some unexplained dust on your furniture and floor.
If you see some 1 to 2mm holes in the Bamboo Tiki Hut Frame. You have 100% Bamboo Tiki Hut Dust Beetles, they just love the soft bamboo frames of these huts.

Some times they hide - You only see them if you try repalce the paper bark.

If it was even possible to Re-Thatch these Bamboo Huts the Dust Beatles will spread to the bamboo strips in the Thatch itself. Which probably wont matter because the Bamboo hut will start collapsing.

We are receiving lots of repair requests for ReThatching Bamboo frame huts. About 7 years ago Cheap Bamboo framed Huts appeared on the market. These huts only last 3 to 5 years if you are lucky. The Thatch is a lot like Japanese paper walls.

Unfortunately there are a few flaws with these Bamboo Huts.
​The 18 degree pitch is too low.
A proper Bali Hut pitch must be 30 to 35 degrees.
​
1)The Palm leaves are very thin. Basically just one layer thick?
​
2) The Bamboo does not last as long as CCA treated timber.
​
3) We have found Dust Beatles in some frames. If you see small little holes in the frame, It's Dust Beatles. They just love Bamboo.
​
4) Frame becomes wobbly after a few years.
​
5) There is no way to put these huts through the council. It is literally just a temporary shaded cover.
​
6) Proper Bali Huts are a lot more insulated thatch these Cheap Shady Bamboo Tiki Huts.

​1) You can see light from the inside looking up
​
2) You can see the strings from the outside holding the papyrus thin leaves together.
​
3) The Roof is not waterproof any more.
​
4) Five years has passed ​​​
​
5) The Roof come in panels - The panel joints will always leak first.
​
6) The panel covers start moving on the outside.
​
7) It Cost 75% less that a Bali Hut
